  45. Installing the new version:
  46. ---------------------------

  48. Replace the ZIPAPER.EXE file for version 1.0 by the new ZIPAPER.EXE.
  49.  
  50. Delete the file ZIPAPER.DAT that is in the same directory as your wallpaper
  51. ZIP file.  If you don't delete this file, you WILL get unexpected results or
  52. errors.
  53.  
  54. Differences:
  55. ------------
  56.  
  57. Version 1.1 can function exactly the same as version 1.0.  You can replace
  58. the old version with this version, and continue using it with no changes
  59. (except as outlined above, in "Installing the new version").
  60.  
  61. If you wish to make use of the new features, read the section on "Advanced
  62. Options".  A brief list of the new features:
  63.  
  64.     1) You can now select the "Tile" or "Center" option for EACH wallpaper
  65.        file in your ZIP file.
  66.  
  67.     2) You can temporarily "Disable" a wallpaper file.  It won't get
  68.        extracted until you re-enable it.

  70.     3) You can use up to 4 occurrences of the above options for each
  71.        wallpaper file.  This allows you to have different set-ups for

  90. ZiPaper (that's "Zip Paper") is a program that chooses one of your .BMP files
  91. for use as Windows Wallpaper.  There are several programs out that do that,
  92. though.  ZiPaper is different - it lets you place all your .BMP Wallpaper
  93. files in a .ZIP file, reducing disk space dramatically.
  94.  
  95. Features:
  96. ---------

  98.    1) Group all your Wallpaper .BMP files into one .ZIP file!  Save on disk 
  99.       space!
  100.  
  101.    2) Get a randomly-chosen Wallpaper file each time you start Windows.
  102.  
  103.    3) ZiPaper remembers all the Wallpaper files it has chosen, so it makes  
  104.       sure that you get each file an equal number of times.
  105.  
  106. New! with version 1.1:
  107. ----------------------

  131. Requirements for running ZiPaper
  132. --------------------------------
  133.  
  134. ZiPaper is a DOS program, and therefore does not require Windows.  However,
  135. it is designed to select Windows .BMP files for use as Wallpaper, so if you
  136. don't have Windows, you don't need this program!
  137.  
  138. You need PKUNZIP.EXE from  PKWARE, Inc.

  142. It is available on many BBSes as Shareware.  You'll also need PKZIP.EXE to
  143. create the ZIP file.
  144.  
  145. Quick Tour:
  146. -----------
  147.  
  148. You run ZiPaper each time BEFORE you start Windows.
  149.  
  150. You tell ZiPaper the name of your ZIP file that contains .BMP files for use
  151. as wallpaper.  It will extract a .BMP file randomly (into the same directory
  152. as the ZIP file), and change its name to WALPAPER.BMP .
  153.  
  154. You make a one-time change to Windows, telling it to use the file
  155. WALPAPER.BMP as wallpaper.
  156.  
  157. That's it!  (Aside from the advanced options, which will be discussed later.)
  158.  
  159. Installation/Running
  160. --------------------
  161.  
  162. Move all the .BMP files you want to use as wallpaper into a ZIP file.  See
  163. PKZIP's instructions for this.  Place the ZIP file in the Windows directory,
  164. or anywhere else you wish.
  165.  
  166. NOTE: Because of a problem with the Windows Control Panel, some people have
  167.       found it almost impossible to get Windows to load wallpaper that is
  168.       not in the Windows directory.  If you don't want to hassle with this
  169.       potential problem, place the ZIP file in the Windows directory.  If
  170.       you're willing to tackle this problem, put the ZIP file wherever you
  171.       wish, and pay attention to the upcoming notes.
  172.  
  173. Place the file ZIPAPER.EXE in any directory on your path (actually, if you
  174. specify the path when you run the program, you can place ZiPaper anywhere on
  175. your hard disk).
  176.  
  177. Since ZiPaper should be run each time BEFORE you run Windows, I suggest you
  178. place the line that runs ZiPaper into your AUTOEXEC.BAT file, or a batch file
  179. that you use to run Windows.  DO NOT run ZiPaper from the Load= or Run= line
  180. of your WIN.INI file.  Doing so will produce unpredictable results.

  185. Here's the syntax for running ZiPaper (anything enclosed in brackets [] is
  186. optional):
  187.  
  188.    ZiPaper [d:\path\]walpaper.zip [[d:\path\]pkunzip.exe] [advanced options]
  189.  
  190.    "d:\path\walpaper.zip" is the drive, path, and file name of the ZIP file
  191.     that contains your .BMP files.
  192.  
  193.    "d:\path\pkunzip.exe" (optional) is the drive, path, and file name of
  194.     PKUNZIP.EXE.  You don't need to specify this if PKUNZIP.EXE is located
  195.     along your current path.
  196.  
  197.    "advanced options" will be explained later.
  198.  
  199. Run Windows, click on Control Panel, Desktop.  In the box titled "Wallpaper",
  200. click in the box that is labeled "File".  Delete what is in there (if
  201. anything) and type in the name "WALPAPER.BMP".  If you have *any* Wallpaper
  202. that you would like Centered, please read the section on Tiled/Centered
  203. Wallpaper, below.  For now, click on "Tile".
  204.  
  205. Click on OK and you're done.
  206.  
  207. NOTE:  If you placed the ZIP file somewhere other than the Windows directory,
  208.        this is where you MIGHT have problems.  Instead of typing
  209.        "WALPAPER.BMP", type "d:\path\WALPAPER.BMP" (where "d:\path" is the
  210.        drive and path of your ZIP file).  If Windows doesn't load the
  211.        Wallpaper file, you will have to modify WIN.INI manually.  I suggest
  212.        doing it outside of Windows, with a text editor.  Find the line that
  213.        indicates "Wallpaper=", and change it accordingly.

  216. Tiled/Centered Wallpaper:
  217. -------------------------
  218.  
  219. If you have wallpaper files that don't fill the screen, you have 2 options. 
  220. The first is to "tile" it.  This causes Windows to duplicate the wallpaper
  221. file across your screen until the screen is full.  The second option is to
  222. "center" it, which causes Windows to center the wallpaper on your screen. 
  223. Neither of these options has any affect on wallpaper that fills the entire
  224. screen.
  225.  
  226. If all your small wallpaper files are either "tiled" or "centered", then set
  227. the option in the Desktop section of Control Panel accordingly.  If not, see
  228. the section on Advanced Options, which will explain how to select "tile" or
  229. "center" for each file.

  236.                            Advanced Options:

  239. NOTE: ZiPaper can function just fine without using these advanced options.
  240.       They are available to enhance ZiPaper's operation, but you certainly
  241.       don't have to use them.
  242.  
  243. ZiPaper creates a file called ZIPAPER.DAT in the same directory as the ZIP
  244. file.  This file stores information about each wallpaper that is in the ZIP
  245. file.  (Don't worry if you add or remove wallpaper files from the ZIP file
  246. - ZiPaper will adjust its file accordingly.)
  247.  
  248. Setup Screen:
  249. -------------

  251. If you wish, you may run ZiPaper with the /S option, and ZiPaper will bring
  252. up a setup screen that allows you to tell ZiPaper a few things about each
  253. wallpaper file.
  254.  
  255.    ZiPaper [d:\path\]walpaper.zip [[d:\path\]pkunzip.exe] /S
  256.  
  257. Here are the things you can tell ZiPaper about each wallpaper:
  258.  
  259.    1) Whether to Tile or Center it.  You may also set it to "Default" (which
  260.       is what they are all initialized to at the start).  "Default" means
  261.       that they will be Tiled or Centered, depending on what you specify the
  262.       default as (at run time - explained below).
  263.  
  264.    2) Whether to temporarily ignore (disable) it.
  265.  
  266. Four Option Groups:
  267. -------------------
  268.  
  269. Here's where it gets a little tricky.  You can specify the above options UP
  270. TO 4 TIMES for each wallpaper.  Why would you want to do that?  Here's a
  271. couple of scenarios (they're simple; you can devise more complex ones):
  272.  
  273.    1) You run Windows in 640x480 mode and 800x600 mode.  You have some
  274.       wallpaper files that you want centered in 640x480, and tiled in
  275.       800x600.  You set one set of options to specify "Centered", and another
  276.       "Tiled".
  277.  
  278.    2) You have some wallpaper files that are not appropriate during working
  279.       hours, but you want to use them after-hours.  You set one set of
  280.       options to "Disable" certain wallpaper files, and you use this option
  281.       during working hours.  You set another other to "Enabled", and you use
  282.       it after hours.
  283.  
  284. Run ZiPaper with the /S option, and look at the screen.  It is pretty self-
  285. explanatory, once you understand the "4 option groups".

  291. Using the screen:
  292. -----------------

  294. Use the Tab key and the arrow keys to move around the screen.  Page Up and
  295. Page Down allow you to scroll through all your files (if you have more than
  296. will fit on one screen).
  297.  
  298. Change an option by typing the first letter.
  299.  
  300. Press Escape when done.  ZiPaper will ask you if you want to save the options
  301. you just changed.
  302.

  304.                  Running with the Advanced Options:
  305. ###########################################################################

  307. ZiPaper [d:\path\]walpaper.zip [d:\path\pkunzip.exe] [/W [/T|/C]] [/1../4]
  308.  
  309. /W  This option means "Update the WIN.INI file", and is used when you want
  310.     ZiPaper to look at the Tile/Center options you specified on the Setup
  311.     Screen (see above).  ZiPaper will change the Tile/Center option
  312.     accordingly.  ZiPaper saves the old version of WIN.INI as WININI.BAK.
  313.     NOTE: the Windows directory must be the current directory in order for
  314.     ZiPaper to find the WIN.INI file.
  315.  
  316. /T or /C  If you set up the Tile/Center option for a file to be "Default",
  317.     this option tells ZiPaper what the "default" is (/T for Tiled, /C for
  318.     Centered).  If you don't specify either, ZiPaper will assume Tiled.
  319.  
  320. /1../4  Specifying /1, /2, /3, or /4 tells ZiPaper which set of options to
  321.     use (see Setup Screen, above).  If you don't specify one of these, then
  322.     /1 is assumed.

  324. Examples:

  327. ZIPAPER D:\GRAPHICS\WALPAPER.ZIP /W
  328.  
  329.   This runs ZiPaper, extracts a wallpaper (based on the first set of
  330.   options), and updates the WIN.INI file for Tile/Center.
  331.  
  332. ZIPAPER D:\GRAPHICS\WALPAPER.ZIP /W /C /2
  333.  
  334.   This runs ZiPaper, extracts a wallpaper (based on the second set of
  335.   options).  If the file's Tile/Center option is "Default", it will be
  336.   centered.  ZiPaper updates the WIN.INI file for Tile/Center.

  343.                           Life with ZiPaper:

  346. Once you've done the installation steps, you need never bother with ZiPaper
  347. again (except to use the Advanced Options, or maybe to send in a shareware
  348. fee <grin>).  You may add and remove .BMP files from your ZIP file with no
  349. fear of upsetting ZiPaper.
  350.  
  351. ZiPaper creates a file called ZIPAPER.DAT in the directory that contains your
  352. ZIP file.  This file keeps track of what .BMP files it has chosen, so that
  353. you get a more even distribution of Wallpaper choices.  It also holds your
  354. advanced options setup.  If you have any problems, you may delete this file.
  355. It will be re-created the next time ZiPaper is run.  (Remember, though, that
  356. if you delete it, you will have to set up your Advanced Options again, if you
  357. use them.)
